Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings continue touring into 2008

Last time we checked in on Miss Sharon Jones and her Dap-Kings, they were heading out to perform a fairly hefty set of gigs. Now, the authors of this year's excellent 100 Days, 100 Nights (Paste's #45 album of the year, no less) are...heading out to perform another set of gigs. Pay attention, Floridians: Many of them are in your fair state. You too, Texas! Eventually, the new-soul crew might rest, but not for the next couple months. What can we say? They work hard for the money.

Sharon Jones & Dap-Kings surprise with pre-tour show

|

New Yorkers and regional citygoers who need a musical pants-kicking would be smart to dip into their lifeless, uninspired pockets for upcoming shows with Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings - one a free-with-album-purchase gig at Union Square's Virgin Mega-store on Oct. 2, the other at Harlem's Apollo Theatre on Oct. 6. We've been heralding this soul maven and her stellar Daptone house band for a while now, even as they parted ways to collaborate and tour hither and thither with Amy Winehouse, Lou Reed and others seeking authentic analog and/or attitude. Hopefully these bits and pieces have gradually amassed themselves upon your sensibilities. For a refresher, visit AOL to stream the group's new album 100 days, 100 Nights (to be released on Oct. 2, if you hadn't inferred).

Brooklynvegan's handing out some free tickets to the Apollo, which might be good to shoot for since there is an unfortunate spacial limit to the Virgin store's actual Mega-ness.

It's not quite 100 nights, but here are some tour dates:

October
2 - New York, N.Y. @ Virgin Megastore
6 - New York, N.Y. @ The Apollo Theatre
16 - Bordeaux @ Theatre Du Vigean

19 - Paris @ L’elysee Montmartre
20 - Nancy @ Jazz Pulsations Nancy
23 - Koln @ Alter Wartesaal

25 - Holland @ Paradiso Upper Hall
26 - Hamburg, Germany @ Mandarin Kasino
27 - Berlin @ Bohannon Soul Club
30 - Weisbaden, Germany @ Schlachtof
31 - Wien @ Supersonic Festival

November
2 - Zurich @ JazznoJazz Festival 2007
3 - Nice @ Theatro Lino
9 - Cambridge, Mass. @ Middle East Underground
10 - Burlington, Vermont @ Higher Ground
11 - Montreal, Quebec @ La Tulipe Montreal
13 - Toronto, Ontario @ Lee's Palace

Behind-the-scenes peek at Daptone Studios

|

Let your eyes linger on the seductive soundboards, spinning tape and meticulous self-preening of Brooklyn’s Daptone studios in this three-minute glimpse into the making of Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings' 100 Days, 100 Nights, out October 2 on what else but Daptone Records.

Sadly, this video lacks substantial tomfoolery.

“Playing with Amy is cool, but playing with Sharon is an experience,” the Dap-Kings told Spinner after working with tabloid-ubiquitous British soulstress Amy Winehouse. “There is a lot spontaneous stuff going on with Sharon. You never know where she is going to go with a tune, so the band has to be right with her all the time.”

Sharon Jones to sing on the silver screen

|

Self-proclaimed “Soul Sister No. 1” Sharon Jones is slated to make a big screen appearance in Denzel Washington’s upcoming Christmas-day film, The Great Debaters, an underdog drama based on a college professor in the 1930’s who inspired his students to form his African American institution’s first debate team and challenge Harvard. Jones will not be among those swapping rhetoric with preppie scum, however. Performing as juke joint singer Lila, she has a speaking part and is featured singing Lucille Bogan classic “That’s What My Baby Likes,” one of several songs she recorded for the soundtrack.

Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings release their new album, 100 Days, 100 Nights Oct. 2 on Daptone Records. Four days afterward, they'll kick off their fall tour with a headlining show at the Apollo Theatre.

15 - Chicago, Ill. @ Park West
16 - Minneapolis, Minn. @ First Avenue

Apparently, something about Augusta, Georgia breeds boundless energy in the few successful musicians connected to the golf-centric city. Sharing the zeal of late former resident James Brown’s paramount, sweaty-browed workaholism, native Sharon Jones, and her band the Dap-Kings have played 267 shows in 14 countries since the release of 2005’s Naturally.

Jones and the Dap-Kings will release their third Daptone Records full-length, 100 Days, 100 Nights on September 25. The dedicated soulstress has been a staple of the New York funk scene since she moved to Brooklyn as a teenager during disco’s prime years and began back-up work for gospel and blues artists.

Since her first full-length with the Dap-Kings in 2002, a spectrum of artists with seemingly little-else in common have called her up to collaborate (Rufus Wainwright, They Might Be Giants), sample (Jurassic 5, Kanye West) and tour (Lou Reed).

Jones claims if you can’t feel her music, “you must be a dead ass!” Fans and newcomers can check their pulses at the American Roots Festival in Brooklyn on July 14 and the Cisco Ottowa Bluesfest on July 15.
