Los Angeles punk-pop band Rocket has announced its signing with Transgressive Records and Canvasback this morning. “Take Your Aim” marks the group’s first release under the label’s banner, as well as their first new track in over two years, following their 2023 debut EP Versions of You, and it’s a stylish take on garage rock revival— complete with ripping guitars, anthemic refrains and the ideal amount of unapologetic punk-rock aura.
Bassist and vocalist Alithea Tuttle described “Take Your Aim” as an “indignant response to feeling misunderstood or taken advantage of by someone but not being able to confront them about it. It’s about a friendship that was built upon them taking more than they give and watching the friendship grow sour as time goes on. The verses illustrate the nature of the relationship; what that person says is what goes and no one can change their mind. The choruses fall back into the repetitiveness of overthinking; if this is all my fault like you say it is then take your aim.”
Versions of You landed at #7 on our list of the 30 best EPs of 2023, with Madelyn Dawson calling the songs “exercises in portrayals of intimate and time-honored friendships, generational, novel ideas and exciting styles, aesthetics and soundscapes.” “If Sonic Youth made pop chart-friendly hits, you’d have Rocket,” she continued. “We need 100 more of these songs.” Rocket is reissuing the EP with an updated tracklist featuring “Take Your Aim.” The release will be available on both vinyl and CD via Transgressive Records and Canvasback, and is set to arrive on April 18.
