Ty Segall Announces New Album Possession, Shares “Fantastic Tomb”

Today, Ty Segall has announced a new solo album, Possession, due for release May 30th via Drag City. The famously prolific singer-songwriter’s 16th solo album arrives just over a year after last January’s Three Bells, which Paste contributor Ben Salmon lauded as “unpredictable, imperfect and utterly fascinating.”

Segall teamed up with longtime collaborator and filmmaker Matt Yoka to write the songs on Possession, which a press release bills as a collection of “quintessentially American stories” that rank among “some of Ty’s most inspired work to date.” The claim raises high expectations, and lead single “Fantastic Tomb” lives up to them. Contrary to the bleakness that its sepulchral title precipitates, it turns out to be an energy-charged anthem that would feel right at home on classic rock radio. Segall sets his hard-luck narrative to the grind of a fried electric guitar riff, while a smattering of keys and blustery saxophone solo further bring his story to life. Likely, in part, owing to Yoka’s cinematic background, the whole song explodes with color; every element sounds like it’s been filtered through California sunshine. If you’re looking forward to a summer road trip, this is the song for you—its freewheelin’ groove practically demands to drift from cracked-open car windows, out onto the open road.
