First Happy Gilmore 2 Trailer Is Basically a Nostalgia Volcano

Watch out everybody, the millennial nostalgia volcano is erupting again, and this time it’s spewing forth … every conceivable reference and callback you might be able to recall from 1996’s Happy Gilmore. That’s right, just shy of a 30th anniversary of the classic, crude Adam Sandler comedy–from the middle of the comedian’s Hollywood golden era–we have a first trailer for Netflix’s Happy Gilmore 2, as part of their not-so-golden, long-term deal with the actor. Like the original, this is a sports comedy, which sees the long since retired Happy Gilmore return to the PGA circuit (or maybe the senior circuit, who knows) in search of one more shot at golf glory. And he’s still a little rough around the edges! Isn’t that funny?

The actual purpose of Happy Gilmore 2 is of course that all-important millennial nostalgia. Curiously, the footage below doesn’t actually zero in on one of the most beloved elements of the original in the form of Christopher McDonald’s Shooter McGavin, who only seems to appear in one brief shot. We’re assuming he’s simply being held for future trailers, given that this footage features everything else you could possibly expect to see in a Happy Gilmore sequel.

Its main priority, perhaps unsurprisingly, is a ceaseless parade of cameos and callbacks, bringing back everyone from Ben Stiller’s abusive retirement home nurse to Julie Bowen’s Sandler love interest. Does Happy now have a kid? Impossible to say, given the scattershot randomness of this footage. He does have a caddy who is portrayed by Bad Bunny, though, so that’s something. The absurd extended cast reportedly includes stars such as Margaret Qualley, Benny Safdie and Scott Mescudi, along with cameos from the likes of Eminem, Reggie Bush and Travis Kelce, and pro wrestlers Becky Lynch and Maxwell Jacob Friedman. The film is even loaded with tons of legitimate pro golfers, including Keegan Bradley, Bryson DeChambeau, John Daly, Tony Finau, Rickie Fowler, Brooks Koepka, Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, Jack Nicklaus, Corey Pavin, Xander Schauffele, Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Will Zalatoris and Lee Trevino–who also appeared in the original Happy Gilmore.

What can we say? Netflix cranks out these cameo-laden, nostalgia-driven legacy sequels because people still line up to watch them, even as we dunk on them. Who cares if Sandler looks like he brought his own wardrobe to the set? We mostly just want to feel, for the briefest of moments, that it’s 1996 again.
