Hovvdy Share Idyllic Video for “Petal,” Lead Single off Their Forthcoming Cranberry

Austin, Texas bedroom-pop duo Hovvdy (pronounced “howdy”) have a new album on the way, and you can watch the video for its lovely lead single below. “Petal” is an arresting indicator that Cranberry, due out on Feb. 9 via Double Double Whammy, is one to watch for.

Hovvdy is the writing and recording project of Charlie Martin and Will Taylor, a drummer duo who bonded over their love of quiet music. They met in 2014, and recorded their first EP in bedrooms and family homes across Texas soon after, going on to release their debut album Taster in 2016—originally put out by Sports Day Records, the record was reissued via Double Double Whammy this year. Hovvdy’s sophomore album Cranberry “expands on a familiar texture, building off Taster’s minimal complexity and covering new ground,” per a press release.

For all its hushed accessibility, “Petal” is a powerful tune, with a bittersweet blend of palpable emotion. “I had a feeling with who you used to be,” Taylor sings in the choruses, his fragile vocals conveying a haunting sense of longing. The video, shot and edited by Riley Engemoen, is an idyllic accompaniment to the track, with alternating shots of Hovvdy performing in someone’s leafy living room and cavorting through suburbia, as if there were no camera on them at all.

In addition to their release of “Petal,” Hovvdy have announced a West Coast fall tour, kicking off on Nov. 7 in Tucson, Ariz. From there, their run will take them up and down the state of California, back through Arizona and into Texas, wrapping up with a hometown show on Nov. 18.
