Pooh Comes to Life in New Trailer for Disney’s Christopher Robin

A.A. Milne’s honey-loving bear is coming back to the big screen in a way we’ve yet to see before. Christopher Robin presents a story in which the titular Christopher has grown up and lost the connection to his imagination, whimsy and forest-dwelling friends. Christopher Robin (Ewan McGregor) is a business-driven man who must stay and work during the vacation to the countryside that he had planned for his family. Pooh finds an older Christopher Robin and introduces him back into the world of whimsy that he inhabited as a child. Yet, Pooh has lost his friends and it is up to Pooh and Christopher to find Tigger, Eeyore, Piglet and Rabbit. They do so and eventually end up in London, where comedy and heartfelt moments will surely ensue.

The film seems to carry a more serious tone, but it balances comedy with nostalgic heartfelt moments in a way that makes it look enjoyable for kids and adults alike. The animals look as if they’ve been ripped from a toy chest and are more beat up, though they are still as cute and kind as ever. The film seems to contemplate the theme of the journey from childhood to adulthood, and what is both lost and gained in the process. Pooh says that “I always get to where I’m going by walking away from where I’ve been,” and this care-free, Tolkien-like adventurousness seems to be exactly what Christopher Robbin is really going for.

Besides McGregor, the film boasts a worthy cast of actors, from Tobie Jones (Owl) to Sophie Okonedo (Kanga). Christopher Robin was directed by Marc Foster with a script by Allison Schroeder and Alex Ross Perry—said screenplay was based on Milne and E.H. Shepard’s original works. The film opens on Aug. 3.
