yeule Shares “Skullcrusher,” Announces New Album Evangelic Girl is a Gun
The Singaporean performer's fourth album is due out May 30 via Ninja Tune.

And the award for the best album title of Q2 goes to… yeule! The Singaporean’s fourth record, Evangelic Girl is a Gun is set to arrive May 30 via Ninja Tune, and they’re kicking off the build-up with “Skullcrusher,” a new single (and follow-up to previous track “Eko”) that builds on yeule’s short but storied glitch-pop legacy. In 2023, we named their last album, softscars, as the 28th-best of that year. I wrote, “There’s a tangible reclamation of grief and trauma across the record, as yeule slides across octaves and pitches, combing through autotune and digital melodies with palpable and generous grace. The work here is evidence that they are one of our next great rock stars—surpassing the work of their predecessors, like Grimes, with ease. There’s no real other way of saying it: yeule is the past, present and future all rolled into one barrier-obliterating voice.”
Speaking about “Skullcrusher” and Evangelic Girl is a Gun, yeule says, “I wanted to bring homage to my life as a painter with this album.” Mentioning the influence of Polish artist Zdzisław Beksiński, they continue: “For me, Beksiński portrays so beautifully, with utmost care, the entities that crawl through his dystopian, tranquil landscapes. The nature of painting as a medium is a reflection of my emotions, both violent and gentle. A fleeting moment of time in my life, transcribed with paint and trapped in time.”
