Justice League

The real difference between Justice League and Snyder’s previous DCEU entries is that the distinct Snyder-ness of it all has been neutered, chastised even. The movie is under two hours, for god’s sake, its many typical philosophical conversations generally snipped and tucked, mythology abridged into brisk expositional conversations or relegated to—in the case of Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) identifying Aquaman (Jason Momoa)—literally seeing everything one needs to know on a wall mural. All in all, Justice League seems to want to just get on with it, which is probably as good a sign as any that anyone who complained Zack Snyder’s films are bloated, ponderous, humorless slogs of pretentious “adult” populist entertainment will find his latest blockbuster operates at a clip much more—dare we say it—delightful than anything he’s done before.

We of course join all of our beautifully silhouetted superfriends as they’re still coming to terms with Superman’s (Henry Cavill, mustache ineptly CGI’d out) death, just trying to keep their shit together. Still, Batman can’t get over that Call of Duty dream he had in Batman v Superman, when he saw an alternate future of the world as hellscape—forces of evil the planet has never known growing in strength—so he realizes time is running out on assembling the League of Justice to face the coming threat. Then the threat actually comes: Steppenwolf (mo-capped Ciarán Hinds with absolutely nothing to do), a fecal-faced cosmic being who seeks to collect the three “Mother Boxes” to harness the power of “the Unity” in order to make the Earth more like his home planet/realm, which we gather is a really sucky place. Wonder Woman explains to Batman that Steppenwolf was once on Earth before, like in King Arthur times or whatever, but was driven back by the combined armies of Themyscira (Wonder Woman’s home island), Atlantis (Aquaman’s HQ) and the humans, who each came away from the mega-fray with one of the Mother Boxes, promising to hide and protect them from future gall-stone-looking demigods. Granted, the Mother Boxes are part of Jack Kirby’s Fourth World series of comics, but there’s a difference between reading those two words and hearing them spoken aloud by an Oscar winning actor.

As Steppenwolf plunks down on Themyscira and Atlantis (in the film’s best and worst action set pieces, respectively) to successfully take back the Mother Boxes, Batman and Wonder Woman’s efforts to conscript metahumans to their cause becomes a lot easier. There’s the Flash (Ezra Miller), who can tap into a quantum energy field of sorts in order to manipulate space-time to go real fast, though he can’t manipulate the criminal justice system to get his dad (Billy Crudup, buttery-eyed) out of jail. There’s the aforementioned Aquaman, who never explains whether his tattoos are Atlantean or just a bad idea he made on dry land. There’s Cyborg (Ray Fisher), who is a cyborg. Each Snyder introduces in earnest, implying whole worlds of backstory while providing just enough context to figure out what those backstories mean for the characters beyond just plainly saying stuff. We learn that Cyborg’s dad made him a cyborg using one of the Mother Boxes, and so Cyborg shares a metaphysical “linkage” with the Unity, but more interesting is how Cyborg struggles with losing his humanity in favor of the near-omnipotence his computer brain allows him. If Chris Terrio (credited with the screenplay alongside Joss Whedon; more on that soon) was able to write a lick of nuance into his characters, Cyborg’s crisis of self might register. Instead, we’re afforded glimpses of better stories littered amongst an overloaded plot just jonesing to get to the end.

Other surprises abound, mostly involving Superman, but somewhere around the third time Steppenwolf appears with his army of undead flying mosquito monsters (who are, like their boss, really strong and good at fighting until they’re not), the specter of Snyder as auteur (get your grimaces out of the way now) looms largely, and Justice League reveals itself as totally devoid of vision, patched together from the many mulligans Snyder has given himself, his contrition vowed in light of all the reasons why everyone seems to like Wonder Woman way better than his 160-minute opuses. Justice League may be a more functional film that its predecessors, but it also lacks the style and go-for-broke big ideas that made Batman v Superman such a fascinating shitshow. In the place of Snyder’s all-consuming hubris is something seemingly committee-created, too aware of past mistakes to try anything that could make the film something more than a thoroughly mediocre $300M investment.

One could look to Joss Whedon’s involvement late in shooting the film to explain its sometimes piecemeal results, but its haphazard nature speaks less to Whedon’s inability to sync up with Snyder’s tendencies (which is also the case) and more to the fact that maybe the MCU and the DCEU no longer need voices like Snyder’s or Whedon’s. Justice League tries to be funny—Ezra Miller logs a lifetime’s worth of mean-mugs—but humor isn’t all that welcome in Snyder’s epic universe. Not because the DCEU can’t land any jokes, but because the sincerity with which he began Man of Steel—the Christ-like imagery; the 9/11 allegories—feels incompatible with what comic book movies represent today. Thor: Ragnarok is funny, but sincerely so, its humor a natural extension of its ridiculous premise. Justice League isn’t funny, because it still believes it has something important to show us. It doesn’t.
