Publisher Devolver Digital announced Monday that Gris, a narrative adventure game coming from Nomada Studio, arrives on the Nintendo Switch and PC later this year. The game features light puzzles, platforming and some skill-based challenges. However, the most compelling aspect that is set to make the game stand out seems to be its visuals.
The announcement trailer features an artistic style similar to a watercolor painting with its bright, vivid colors lending a dappled texture to the game world. The detailed animations are also reminiscent of an animated film. Devolver Digital and Nomada Studio are looking to make the narrative experience accessible to all players, as they state the game is “free of danger, frustration or death. Players will explore a meticulous designed world brought to life with delicate art, detailed animation, and an elegant original score.”
Devolver Digital Goes on to describe the game as a “serene and evocative experience,” detailing the game’s narrative as follows in a press release:
Gris is a hopeful young girl lost in her own world dealing with a painful experience in her life. Her journey through sorrow is manifested in her dress, which grants new abilities to better navigate her faded reality. As the story unfolds, Gris will grow emotionally and see her world in a different way, revealing new paths to explore using her new abilities.
Gris is the debut title from the Barcelona-based Nomada Studio. Many of the team’s developers and artists have experience outside of the game industry—the art for Gris was created by artist Conrad Roset, while the score is the music of Barcelona chamber-pop trio Berlinist. No firm release date was given, but Gris will make an appearance at this year’s Gamescom.
