Minecraft Animated Series to Air on Netflix

Minecraft has long been the best-selling game of all time, so in a season of acclaimed television adaptations, it should come as no surprise that it too is taking the leap. As part of the 15 year anniversary celebration of the game, developer Mojang Studios and Netflix announced development of an animated series exclusive to the streaming titan.

Fans of Minecraft may remember Netflix’s prior partnership with Mojang in bringing the now-delisted Minecraft: Story Mode to Netflix Games, but don’t expect to hear from any characters associated with Telltale Studios’ game. The new CG-animated series will instead feature new characters in an original story with the aim of “showing the world of Minecraft in a new light.”

Development of the series will be helmed by Wildbrain Studios, a frequent Netflix collaborator. The Vancouver based production studio is behind several animated Netflix shows, such as Sonic Prime, Ninjago: Dragons Rising and Carmen Sandiego, the latter of which received a nomination for Outstanding Children’s Program at the 71st Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards.

This announcement serves as an exciting addition to the Minecraft 15 year anniversary celebration, following yesterday’s news of a real life Minecraft adventure. Other favors include free maps and items, sales on the title itself and other collectibles like desktop wallpapers. While the festivities have primarily focused on honoring player experiences through the decade and a half of Minecraft, Mojang, Netflix, and Wildbrain’s partnership aims to give fans even more to look forward to.
