It’s always interesting to see a pair of Hollywood A-listers whose careers have never really intersected share top billing in a major new film. Take the combination of Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell–two dynamic performers we’ve never seen anywhere close to each other before. But that won’t stop them from getting all doe-eyed about each other in the first trailer for A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, an unusual and emotionally charged looking fantasy dramedy set for release in the U.S. in Sept. 2025.
A Big Bold Beautiful Journey is the third feature film of South Korean-born American filmmaker Kogonada, known for his tender dramas Columbus and After Yang, the latter of which also starred Farrell. This one, if we’re being honest, looks significantly more mawkish in tone and outline than Kogonada’s previous works, which handled emotion in deftly realistic but earnest ways. Here’s hoping that the first trailer for A Big Bold Beautiful Journey is merely playing up its “inspirational” qualities for the future multiplex audience–though it might also represent an attempt by Kogonada to break through into more commercially viable, wide release filmmaking.
Regardless, the film stars Robbie and Farrell as a pair of single wedding attendees who meet by chance and are drawn to each other, only to be drawn back together by elements of modern society seeming to conspire to reunite them. It’s a modern fantasy mindset that almost evokes the likes of, say … Will Ferrell’s Stranger Than Fiction, perhaps? The two end up embarking on the titular journey together through a series of seemingly magical doors, which bring them to various points in their own past lives that made them into the people they are today. Watching the trailer below, the reaction of the two seems a bit cutesy–it’s as if they’re not even the least bit surprised to be traveling through time with a new potential romantic partner. One wonders if this project will share any DNA with the about-to-release The Life of Chuck from Mike Flanagan.
Regardless, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey will certainly have the marquee names going for it. It’s currently scheduled to hit U.S. theaters on Sept. 19, 2025. Check out the first trailer below.
