Annabelle: Creation is the fourth movie in The Conjuring universe, born after largely popular receptions to each film based on the exploits of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren.
From Warner Bros, Annabelle: Creation is the origin story to 2014’s Annabelle from New Line Cinema, itself a prequel to 2013’s The Conjuring. Another spinoff, The Nun, is in production for a 2018 release.
Annabelle: Creation shows viewers the inception of the possessed doll that has been scaring audiences for year when a young couple takes in a nun and several orphans after the death of their daughter Annabelle. James Wan (The Conjuring 2) returns to produce and David F. Sandberg (Lights Out) directs.
In the second trailer, Annabelle plays a game of breadcrumbs with one unlucky orphan and several characters are dragged through the air in typical evil spirit style. The trailer also gives audiences more insight into the couple’s daughter before her death, which led to the creation of Annabelle by her doll-crafting father.
The Conjuring series continues to be a horror heavyweight; both The Conjuring and The Conjuring 2 grossed $320 million worldwide, and Annabelle grossed $256 million worldwide on a $6 million budget. Annabelle: Creation will follow those films up when it hits theaters on Aug. 11.
