New Paddington in Peru Trailer Reveals First Look At Baby Paddington

Marmalade sandwiches at the ready – a new trailer has been released for Paddington in Peru.

The third instalment in the franchise based on the beloved children’s novels by Michael Bond, this film will see Paddington Bear (voiced by Ben Whishaw) return to Peru on a mission to visit his Aunt Lucy (Imelda Staunton) and gives fans a first look at the adorable baby Paddington, who was rescued as a cub by Lucy in the Amazon rainforest.

This is the first film in the franchise to not be directed by Paul King (though he remains as a writer), with Dougal Wilson taking over instead. The cast has also undergone quite a few changes since the original line-up was announced back in June 2023. Though Rachel Zegler was initially announced to be joining the cast, she later had to pull out as a result of the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike and was replaced by Carla Tous. The biggest change, however, is the replacement of Sally Hawkins as matriarch Mrs Brown. In a statement that announced Emily Mortimer as her replacement, Hawkins stated that it “felt the right time to hand the reins over to another,” marking an end to her time as Paddington’s adoptive mother.

Despite these changes, Paddington in Peru still promises to be as wholesome as its predecessors. This new trailer sees our blue duffel-coated bear travel to the Home for Retired Bears, a retirement home manned by a host of nuns led by the Reverend Mother (Olivia Colman). When Lucy is nowhere to be found, Paddington and the Brown family set off on an adventure to find the mythical city of El Dorado in the hopes of reuniting the two bears.

Since the release of the first film in 2014, the Paddington franchise has brought joy and childlike wonder into theaters worldwide and has particularly touched the hearts of the British. With its focus on the obvious immigrant allegory of a young bear from a foreign land finding his way to London and searching for a new home, Paddington became one of the few symbols of hope in a post-Brexit Britain. One can only hope that this new addition will offer some reprieve to audiences after a year of social unrest.

With the return of most of the original cast and the introduction of Antonio Banderas (who is no stranger to animated furry animals) as the mysterious Hunter Cabot, Paddington in Peru is set to be the highlight of the 2025 children’s film calendar.

Paddington in Peru will be released on January 17, 2025. You can watch the new trailer below:
