It’s been 40 years since Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind first gave audiences a lesson on the three types of UFO encounters. Now, the iconic 1977 sci-fi thriller is returning to U.S. theaters and there’s a new trailer for its re-release.
Close Encounters is the kind of classic (of which Spielberg has created many) that some believe spurred an entire cultural era. Nearly twice as old as the average Paste intern, the film has only taken on more more meaning and value over time, and without feeling dated. In an age where sci-fi permeates all facets of our tech-advancing culture, a sci-fi film about close encounters feels relevant, yet unique in its correlation with shows like Stranger Things, and reboots of The X-Files and Twin Peaks, all interacting with the supernatural.
The film will be in domestic theaters for one week beginning Sept. 1, presented in a 4K restoration of Spielberg’s director’s cut. Watch the remastered trailer above to learn a little more about alien encounters and remind yourself just how long Spielberg has been running the game.
