In honor of Hulu’s new Veronica Mars revival, the show’s classic theme song is getting revamped. For the eight-episode Hulu reboot, the theme song, “We Used to Be Friends” by The Dandy Warhols, will be replaced with a rendition performed by The Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde.
In a teaser for the new theme song, Veronica Mars star Kristen Bell attempts a breakup of sorts when she suggests doing shows with other people to the series’ creator, Rob Thomas.
“Rob, we shared the most intimate thing two people can share: a television series on UPN,” she says to console Thomas.
Thomas conjectures that the breakup is because of Bell’s disinterest in the theme song.
“It’s the theme song, isn’t it?” Thomas says. “You wanted something new, fresh.”
And something new and fresh is exactly what Bell gets when, at the end of the teaser, Thomas shows up outside her window, Say Anything style, with a boombox blasting Hynde’s version of “We Used to Be Friends.”

Looks like we’ll be getting something grittier in Hynde’s dark-pop rendition.
While the beloved 2000s teen noir drama was canceled after three seasons in 2017, fans got another installment of Veronica Mars’s story with a feature film funded by a Kickstarter campaign.
Now, Veronica is set to return with a long-awaited fourth season on July 26 as she investigates a spring break crime wave in her fictional hometown of Neptune, California.
