Exclusive: Daisy the Great Announce New Album The Rubber Teeth Talk

Today, Brooklyn duo Daisy the Great announced their new album, The Rubber Teeth Talk. As the full record bubbles just beyond the horizon, Mina Walker and Kelley Dugan set the stage with its assailing lead single “Ballerina.”

On The Rubber Teeth Talk, Walker and Dugan set out to embody the clashing dualities within everyday life. The pair wrote together every day, transcribing beauty from their tedious day-to-day tasks as equally as their most memorable moments. After all, all of it was real, all of it had meaning, so why cherry pick the minutes when they could just as easily have the whole hour? Alongside bandmates Nardo Ochoa and Matti Dunietz, the group spent a year preparing the album with crossed fingers—biding their time in hopes of a collaboration with legendary producer Catherine Marks (boygenius, St. Vincent, Alanis Morissette).

Finally able to sneak into Marks’ schedule, Daisy the Great got straight to work recording. Walker and Dugan elaborated on the sessions for The Rubber Teeth Talk saying, “The whole band came every day, even if they weren’t recording. It felt like such a family. We joked, bickered, and jammed, taking time to find really cool sounds as we knew we wanted the record to be super lush and full of little pockets – different worlds. A lot of the album is about self-perception, comparison, and insecurity in some way. There’s also a thread about fear and trusting yourself that things will be okay. Trusting that it’s an adventure, or a journey, and finding a way to stick around through the messiness.”

Meanwhile, “Ballerina” sees Daisy the Great on a shared power-pop mean-streak—one that obliterates the fragile, false-idol lifestyle that social media loves to portray. The track is a whirlwind of lively punk guitars and unapologetic outbursts that point the middle finger at Snapchat makeup filters and beauty standards everywhere. Walker and Dugan don’t sugarcoat a thing, and “Ballerina” serves as just the latest example of their power as a songwriting duo. It’s brash, candid, and messy in the best way possible and, to top it all off, “Ballerina” radiates that effortless, quirky self-awareness that keeps Daisy the Great feeling fresh every time they return.

“The image of the ‘ballerina’ represents a childhood dream of perfection: some imagined apex of beauty, purpose, talent, success,” they say. “We are fed this idea that flawlessness exists and that we’re not good enough. It’s so easy to fall into comparing ourselves to a manufactured ideal that we see around us and online and on TV—growing up and all the time. We’ve actually been playing this song live for a couple of years. We wrote it right before our first headlining tour and we loved playing it so much. (It took us a while to figure out how to bring that live energy to a recorded version of it.) We worked on ‘Ballerina’ with our incredible producer Catherine Marks and it was really special to get to build up this song with such a genius woman and role model for us running the ship.”

“In the music video, directed by Zach Tavel, we wanted to combine the live energy of the band with uncanny theatrical elements. We played a lot with body modification with amazing prosthetics by Olive Ryan (Mina with a cassette player chest and Kelley with a TV playing embedded in her back), and huge ballerina legs en pointe crafted by Maeve McLaughlin. Jaclyn Goldstein also created an awesome decaying music box bedroom for us. We filmed in Brooklyn over the course of a few days and it was a really ambitious video to pull off. We’re so proud of it and grateful for the whole team’s crazy skill and creativity.”
