Multi-instrumentalist wunderkind Taja Cheek’s musical alter-ego L’Rain has unveiled a new single, “New Year’s UnResolution”—her first new release since her acclaimed 2021 LP Fatigue. “New Year’s UnResolution” explores a poppier side of L’Rain, as she dances through the aftermath of a breakup. Cheek’s compositional skills come through in thoughtful additions to the backing track, as sparkling electronic sounds rise.
“New Year’s UnResolution” is a study in learning how to live again. “I wonder: what is it like to feel like you’ve forgotten a part of yourself?” Cheek asks. “How do you deal with the turmoil of stepping into a distant unknown after a period of fierce intimacy?” The song is a gorgeous run-through of that very turmoil; a rich sonic landscape ringing with a sense of devotional, self-assured hope.
