Last week, the Hives and Bad Nerves arrived in Atlanta with some noise to make. Touring their latest LP, The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons, the Hives brought a 17-song setlist to the Tabernacle and positively cruised through some seriously fun, chaotic rock ‘n’ roll. They rummaged through their songbook, tackling songs like “Good Samaritan,” “I’m Alive,” “Countdown to Shutdown” and, their bombastic, stadium-shaking closer, “Tick Tick Boom.”
Last year, Paste music editor sat down with the band’s frontman Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist about their new record. “Known for being those loud, shredding dudes in black and white suits who make chaotic, unmistakable garage rock classics, the Hives found themselves in a state of flux after their longtime songwriter, Randy Fitzsimmons, passed away in the time that’s passed since Lex Hives,” Mitchell wrote. “When they stumbled upon Fitzsimmons’ grave, they found demos for the 12 tracks that now make up The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons. Whether or not they can continue without their beloved, secret sixth member beyond this record remains to be seen, but there’s no doubt it’s going to be one hell of a ride.”
