HBO has released a new set of stills from the forthcoming second season of Big Little Lies. The slow-burning murder-mystery series about five women in Monterey, Calif., returns on June 9 with the addition of Academy Award winner Meryl Streep to the main cast.
The photos show cast members Zoë Kravitz, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley and Streep staring ominously away from the camera while Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman and Woodley embrace at their kids’ school.
Streep has joined the cast to play the mother of Alexander Skarsgård’s character, Perry, who was married to Kidman’s Celeste. Based on promotional material for the season, it appears Streep’s character will be at odds with the group of women now known as the Monterey Five due to her suspicions about their involvement in her son’s death last season.
The first season of Big Little Lies was directed by Jean-Marc Vallée, who is known for directing the films Wild and Dallas Buyers’ Club along with the HBO miniseries Sharp Objects. The first season was written by the creator of the series, David E. Kelley, who has also penned the script for season two. Andrea Arnold will take over directing duties for the forthcoming season.
The series took home five trophies at the 69th Primetime Emmy Awards in 2017, including Outstanding Limited Series, Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series, and acting awards for Kidman, Skarsgård and Dern.
