Reconsidering Gilmore Girls: Does Rory Really Deserve Our Hate?

Rory denies both being her mother and being swayed by the boy, but the pilot lays down the groundwork for Lorelai overly-identifying with Rory. Of course Rory is snarky and witty, since it’s the lingua franca of her household and entire town. But as much as she admires her mom, Rory can’t replicate her mother’s spitfire personality—partially because someone needs to be the mediating force, and partially because Rory feels most at home watching Marx Brothers and eating Chinese takeout on the couch. Lorelai tells her at 15, “You’ve always been the sensible one in this house.” 

Lorelai knows that Rory’s birth was faced with opposition. In a Season 3 flashback from “Dear Emily and Richard,” she and Christopher overhear Christopher’s father Straub suggest to Emily and Richard that Lorelai have an abortion because it isn’t fair that Christopher should “sacrifice” his future. Lorelai’s parents disagree, yet when Rory meets her paternal grandparents for the first time it becomes clear that Straub’s opinion has not changed. That episode (“Christopher Returns”) likely confirms Rory’s greatest fear. It doesn’t matter how good of a student she is, how beloved she is by her community, or how hard she tries to mend the relationship between her mom and grandparents; her existence ruined her parents’ lives. 

Rory can’t be expected to redeem Lorelai and Christopher’s mistakes and be her own person. She likes to be quietly competent and, much like Christoper, seeks the path of least resistance. Rory’s adult years, starting at Yale, present an existential challenge during which she tries to live a life by following her will, which is still muddled by leftover obligations towards her family.

As far as her career goes, Rory rarely demonstrates skill as a reporter. She’s a good writer and editor, an asset to the newsroom, but lacks journalistic instincts. The pieces that receive praise—a meditation on obsolescence and the new pavement at Chilton, and the fat-shaming ballet review—are works of commentary, not the result of her investigating and finding a scoop. In A Year in the Life, her inability to come up with an angle for “why people wait in lines” in full view of a group of people standing in line without even knowing what’s waiting for them proves Mitchum Huntzberger right. She ain’t got it. 

Timid, detail-oriented, and more comfortable with academia than real-life exploration, Rory has the temperament of a perma-grad student, albeit one with excellent project management skills. One has to wonder how she knew her goals at such a young age: Harvard, Christiane Amanpour, adventures in international travel. They feel representative of Lorelai’s missed opportunities and her ability to make anything sound cool. 

Even Rory’s romantic interests reflect a desire to replicate and rectify the family dynamics with which she is most familiar. Christopher’s absence absolutely impacts Rory’s dating life because she doesn’t want a guy like her dad (although Amy Sherman-Palladino has stated otherwise). From a plot standpoint, Christopher and Logan serve similar functions, but with respect to personality, Rory always prefers people who resemble Lorelai. When Rory first starts dating Dean, Lorelai explicitly draws comparisons between Dean and Christopher. Lorelai favors Dean because he’s a real Stars Hollow guy, and Rory recognizes the kind of comfort and steadiness Dean offers. But Rory needs someone who can keep up and share the same quality of banter as her mom. Enter Jess, with whom Lorelai clashes because she was once a quippy, rebellious teen, understands their allure, and Rory’s susceptibility to their rhetoric. 

In Logan, Lorelai sees the kind of kid she might have been had she followed the path her parents set for her. Like Lorelai, Logan advocates for Rory, pushes her to explore beyond her comfort zone, and struggles to resist the pressure his parents place on him despite having the potential to accomplish whatever he’d like to do. Logan is the person who points out Rory’s privilege to her. At 32, Rory’s career trajectory is far more like her father’s (her lost underwear is like his declined credit card) while Logan has a job, a home, and a fiancée he isn’t committed to. (This makes Odette Logan’s Max Medina?)  

While the case for Paris as Rory’s one true love would be for another essay, Rory’s inevitably navel-gazing multi-generational memoir project is her most honest attempt to grasp at a sense of purpose. Despite this, the project feels like another attempt to relieve the intergenerational tension. But if she can add up the history to find her destined place in it, she may be able to write herself into a narrative of hope and optimism. Framed correctly, she may see her birth as more than a mistake.   

Rory Gilmore is not Amy Sherman-Palladino. Nor is she Lorelai or Emily or Christopher. Her potentially having a kid means that she has to live for someone else, yet she’s only now learning to live for herself, even if it meant that she had to carry an affair with her married high school ex, commit grand larceny with a blond man, and drop out of Yale to get to that point.
