Netflix Renews Running Point for Season 2

Netflix is keeping Running Point on the court. The streamer has renewed the basketball-themed series for a second season, just a week after its February 27 premiere. According to Netflix, the single-camera comedy pulled in 9.3 million views in its first four days, making it the third most-watched English-language show of the week. How reliable is that data? Impossible to say. But Running Point is performing well enough to stay in the game.
Running Point stars Kate Hudson as Isla Gordon, who takes over as president of a professional basketball team after a scandal forces her brother out. The show’s premise is loosely inspired by Jeanie Buss, the real-life president of the Los Angeles Lakers. The ensemble cast includes Brenda Song, Drew Tarver, Scott MacArthur, Max Greenfield, Keyla Monterroso Mejia, Roberto Sanchez, Uche Agada, Dane DiLiegro, Fabrizio Guido, Jay Ellis, Toby Sandeman, Chet Hanks, and Justin Theroux.
The series comes from writers Mindy Kaling, Ike Barinholtz, and David Stassen, who also executive produce, with Stassen serving as showrunner. Additional EPs include Hudson, Buss, Howard Klein of 3 Arts Entertainment, and Linda Rambis, the Lakers’ manager of special projects. Running Point is produced by Kaling International in partnership with Warner Bros. Television under Kaling’s overall deal with the studio.
The renewal keeps Running Point in Netflix’s growing lineup of sports-adjacent programming, while other new comedies, like No Good Deed, are still in limbo. (Personally, I’m fine with that. I’m enjoying Running Point so far, and No Good Deed works well as a limited series.) No word yet on when season two will drop.
